3D visualisation as a Communicative Aid in Advice-Giving over Distance

Here we look at how 3D (3-dimensional) visualisation paired with video conferencing can be used to improve access to information about complex pharmaceutical products over distance also at low bandwith.
We have created a web-based communication service called AssistancePlus that allows an advisor to demonstrate the physical handling of a complex pharmaceutical product to an advice-seeker over distance with the aid of 3D visualisation and audio/video conferencing. The service is designed to be adaptable to any bandwidth setting and uses only commonly available web technologies.
In evaluations, the participants found the 3D features helped them understand the advisors’ instructions better than when using the telephone. For some kinds of communication it was even preferred over face-to-face communication.
