Commencement Ceremony - Promovering

FAQ and support from IDA

Why should I attend?

The conferment of doctoral degrees and the ceremonial inauguration of professors are the university's most splendid events. Invited to the conferment of degrees are those who shall be conferred doctoral degrees, Promovendi; those that defended a doctoral thesis, Doctores Juvenes, and honorary doctors, Doctores Honoris Causa. Read more here

It is a two day event, including one day for the inaugaration itself and one day for the University Gala Concert.

Invitation

You will receive the invitation during or after the semester of your graduation, depending on graduation date. It will be sent to the address stated in Ladok. There is one ceremony each year, usually during spring. You get two chances to attend. The invitation is being sent out from central LiU and the Master of Ceremonies is Camilla Smedberg, promotion@liu.se

Support from IDA

The research associates (Promovendi) attire is formal (högtidsdräkt). To help you in this here is a list over places in Linköping and Norrköping where you can go to rent this type of clothing, unless you have them already - which is not so common.

Mandatory: To attend the ceremony you also need a doctoral hat if you do your Phd within the subjects Computer Science or Design (or a laurel wreath if you do your research within Statistics or Cognitive Science). As an extra support to help you to keep the costs down for this event, IDA has a few hats in different sizes available for you to borrow - of course you can also buy a hat of your own if you like (see more information here), or maybe borrow one from a Phd friend or supervisor.
