DDLS course Transfer Learning for Life Science

Examination



The students are examined by:

  • Active participation at practical sessions during the on-site week
  • Project work presentation
  • Project work opposition
For receiving grade Pass, these three activites must be completed.

Project work

In their project work, students need to apply the methods learned during the course in a life science context they are interested in (using own datasets). The level and the content of the project is supposed to be dependent on the ambitions and interests of the student. The student may explore different aspects of transfer learning (TL) in the context of data driven life science. Here are some examples ordered by the level of the technical difficulty:
  • Application of a few TL methods considered in the course on a given life science dataset, evaluating and comparing the performance of the methods.
  • Study of a TL method that was not considered in the course, applying it to the life science dataset of interest followed by evaluation.
  • Modifying some existing TL method to make it possible to handle pecularities of the structure of the life science dataset/task in mind, followed by applying and evaluating the adapted method in a given life science context.
  • Based on the frameworks/ideas explained in the course, create own model and its implementation in Pytorch/Tensorflow, followed by analyses and evaluations of this model in the context of a given life science application.

The amount of effort put in the project work should correspond to 40 hours of full-time work, including numerical experiments, related literature reading and writing the report. The project work should result in a) report in a paper format having 2-4 pages of text plus some additional figures/tables and references; b) presentation slides to be used during the final presentation.

Project presentation and opposition

  • Project presentation is scheduled during one of two days in the end of the course, see Timetable (left menu). Each presentation may take up to 20 minutes.
  • Each student is supposed to send their report to another student from the course who will act as opponent. The role of the opponent is to critically review the report and prepare questions for the final presentation. Opposition should take up to 10 minutes, so every opponent is expected to prepare approximately 10 questions/comments.
