Goals

After this course the student will be able to:
- Plan and carry out a research project in human-computer interaction.
- Write a paper for the CHI conference.

Prerequisites

None.

Organization

The course is organised as a series of ten seminars based on the subcommittees of the major conference in human-computer interaction (the CHI conference). We will read exemplar papers from the different subcommittees. The topics for eight of the seminars will be decided by popular vote among the subcommittees (see Content below). The students will also, in groups, do a smaller research project within one of the topics and write a paper based on it.

Eight of the following topics covering the CHI-conference subcommittees:
- Accessibility and Aging
- Blending Interaction: Engineering Interactive Systems & Tools
- Developing Novel Devices: Hardware, Materials, and Fabrication
- Computational Interaction
- Critical Computing, Sustainability, and Social Justice
- Design Games and Play
- Health
- Interacting with Devices: Interaction Techniques & Modalities
- Interaction Beyond the Individual
- Learning, Education, and Families
- Privacy and Security
- Specific Applications Areas
- Understanding People (Quantitative Methods, Qualitative Methods, or Mixed and Alternative Methods)
- User Experience and Usability
- Visualization

There will be 16-24 papers in total for the seminars.

Additional individual literature search is required for the smaller research projects performed in groups.

Lectures

Ten seminars. Introduction and project presentations start and end the course. The eight seminars in between cover eight of the CHI subcommittees.

Examination

Grades: Pass/fail

Criteria for a passing grade: 80% attendance, written report from a smaller research project in human-computer interaction.
