Course plan
Recommended for
Doctoral students interested in the intersection between design and the public sector. The course is open to PhD students around the world.

This is an open recurring PhD course, where it is beneficial to have a background in design, public sector innovation, or similar
Course objectives
The general objective of the course is to provide an overview of current
research topics and challenges in the intersection between design and the
public sector.
By doing so the course gives participating PhD students a possibility to
develop a broad knowledge base in the area, and to gain insights into the
possibilities and limitations of research in society.
Course structure
This course centers around a series of open seminars combined with researcher
seminars. There are between 3 and 4 such occasions every semester, and in total
are 4 hours in length.
Students are expected to participate in these seminars, prepare by reading and
commenting on related work. Related work will be distributed beforehand, when
applicable.
Preparatory work should be shared with the examiner, and be used as a
foundation for the discussion during the researcher seminar. A written
reflection should be submitted after the course. More specific instructions
will be sent to participating PhD students.
Course content
The seminars focus on research topics and challenges in the intersection
between design and the public sector. The speakers are invited to give an open
seminar, and then to discuss with a group of researchers about their research.
The specific topics for the seminars are sent out with the course information
after registering for the course.
Course schedule
Seminars are held on four Friday afternoons between 1330-16, jan 24th, feb
21st, mar 21st and apr 25th. The seminars planned for spring 2025 are by Johan
Redström, Ramia Mazé, Marie Louise Juul Söndergaard and Pelle Kristensson.
The final schedule for the course will be sent out after registering for the
course, and closer to the start of the semester.
Course examination
To pass this course, the students must:
1) Attend the seminars,
2) Prepare for each seminar by reviewing associated reading materials and
sending this to the examiner,
3) Produce a written reflection after the course.
Credits and certificates
3 ECTS credits
For PhD students not in the Swedish system, a certificate of completing the
course will be issued.
Recurring course
This course is a recurring course. This course is offered each semester with new content. Students can sign up for each course and receive credits, up to a maximum of 6 credits total.
Organization and collaboration
The course is organized by the design faculty at Linköping University in
collaboration with Experio Lab.
