Recommended for

Doctoral students interested in research in societal safety and security.

Prerequisites

This course is open only for students enrolled in the Forum Securitatis graduate school.

Course objectives

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of current research challenges connected to the general topic of societal safety and security, as well as to develop general academic skills.

Course structure

This course will conducted as a series of seminars, study visits and other academic events (dissertation defences, conferences, and similar). There are about four such educational activities or events per course. Each activity is between 2 hours and a full day in length.


The students are expected to attend the seminars and events, and prepare by reviewing material distributed beforehand, if applicable. A short written reflection is required after each seminar or event.

Course content

The educational activities in this course focus on

1) general academic topics such as research ethics, academic writing, presentation techniques, or invited talks from support functions at LiU (e.g., the library, communication department), and

2) specific topics within the scope of societal safety and security, such as invited talks from researchers and stakeholders, presentations of current research project, reviews of current important publications, and current events related to societal safety and security.


The specific topics for the seminars and activities are sent out with the course information after registering for the course.

Course schedule

The course schedule will be published at the start of the term.

Course examination

To pass this course, the students must:
1) Attend the seminars/activities,
2) Prepare for each seminar by reviewing associated reading materials,
3) Produce a written reflection at the end of the course.

Credit

1.5 ECTS credits.

Recurring courses

This is a recurring course. This course is offered each semester with new content. Students can sign up for each course and receive credits, up to a maximum of 6 credits total.
