Course plan

Course goal

The main goal of this course is to introduce and familiarize the students with various human factors challenges within emergency response. This includes both everyday emergency response and response to major disaster and mass-casualty events. Students already familiar with general human factors theories and methods will gain further insight into the practical domain of emergency response and its particular challenges. Students already familiar with emergency response will gain insight into how the theories of human factors can be applied to various practical problems facing emergency responders.

The course is primarily intended for PhD students in cognitive science, human factors, psychology, informatics, disaster medicine, and similar.

Prerequisites

The students should either be familiar with fundamental theories in human factors psychology (e.g. by having taken courses such as 729G84, 769A09, or similar), or be familiar with emergency response systems (e.g., emergency medicine, emergency services, disaster management, or similar).

Organization

The course mainly consists of literature seminars along with presentations by invited speakers. The students are expected to read the assigned literature and prepare before the seminars. The students will be assigned seminars for which they will select relevant literature and give a brief presentation.

-Decision making and metacognition by emergency responders
-Leadership, communication, and teamwork in emergency response systems
-Human and system performance challenges in emergency response
-Current research challenges in emergency response
-The emergency response systems of the future
-Human-system interaction and other technological challenges in emergency response
-Case studies in disaster and emergency response
