Course plan
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this 7.5 ECTS credits course, the student will be able to:
- identify, describe, and discuss various experiential and cognitive linguistic
phenomena (such as metaphor, conceptual blending, and cognitive grammar)
- analyze the relationship between experience, language, and cognition
- orally and in writing critically review and relate to research in cognitive
linguistics.
Course content
The course introduces the research field of cognitive linguistics, that is, the
study of how language is based on our experience, perception, and
conceptualization of the world. The course covers the following subjects:
- Experience
- Language in use
- Conceptual structure
- Cognitive semantics
- Metaphor theory
- Semantic structure
- Conceptual blending
- Cognitive grammar
Teaching and working methods
The course is based on a series of approximately ten seminars and writing of an essay and/or critical review. Invited guests will hold some of the seminars, students will hold some seminars, and the course leader will hold some seminars.
Examination
For a passing grade, 80% participation in seminars is required. An essay or critical review on a chosen topic in cognitive linguistics must also be written and orally presented. Acting as a discussant of another student's essay is also required.
Grades
Two-grade scale, pass/fail.
