CUAS Organization

The SSF CUAS (Collaborative Unmanned Aircraft Systems) project consists of researchers from four specific groups within three different departments:

  • AIICS: The Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems Division at the Department of Computer and Information Science, Linköping University. This group is led by Professor Patrick Doherty who is the project leader and one of the principal investigators in the CUAS project. Dr. Jonas Kvarnström and Dr. Fredrik Heintz are integration liaisons in CUAS and ensure the cohesiveness of the CUAS team but also manage the integration of systems-oriented activities.

  • C-Research: The Norrköping Visualization Center – C. The work in the area of multimodal decision support interfaces and visualization is headed by Professor Anders Ynnerman who is a principal investigator in the CUAS project. Ynnerman is the director of the Norrköping Visualization Center – C and he also leads the media and information technology research division. The project PI of topic 6 is Dr. Karljohan Lundin Palmerius who obtained his PhD in haptic interfaces for volumetric visualization.

  • ISY-SIG: The Sensor Informatics Group at the Division of Automatic Control, Linköping University. Professor Thomas Schön was a member of this group and was an original principal investigator from 2011 to 2014. His role has been taken over by Dr. Karl Granström in 2014.

  • ISY-CVL: The Computer Vision Laboratory at the Division of Automatic Control, Linköping University. Professor Michael Felsberg leads this group and is one of the principal investigators in the CUAS project.

The CUAS Board consists of the principal investigators with Patrick Doherty serving as Chair. The board meets once a month to review, monitor and discuss the project. Additional co-investigators are also members of the board. Decisions regarding the project are made collectively by the board. Dr. Fredrik Heintz and Dr. Jonas Kvarnström coordinate the integration and communication among the four project groups. Hands-on laboratory integration meetings take place on a routine basis among the PhD students, post-docs and software engineers involved in the project. A workshop takes place once per year to summarize the results of the project and provide stimulus for future work in the project. Scenario demonstrations take place on a regular basis to demonstrate the integrative and systems-oriented progress in the project. In these cases, the actual UAV systems running CUAS software are deployed and demonstrated.
