About the Conference

What is PBL and where is it going?

During the last decades hundreds of educational programs in higher education throughout the world have been reformed in accordance with the basic ideas of the PBL pioneers at Mc Master university in Canada. Besides, educational programmes aiming at the health care sector, engineering, business administration, law and teacher education are but a few of other faculties and professional schools which have implemented PBL-programmes. It goes without saying that the diffusion of PBL-implementations into new areas has meant the introduction of modifications and/or additions of the original concept. In spite of the massive experience that is now at hand, we still need to further our knowledge about PBL.

We would like to high-light some of these issues in our international conference on PBL. Like the first conference in Linköping in 1995 we are aiming for an inter-faculty profile, focusing on the following themes.

DevelopmentWhat has happened up till today regarding the theoretical elements and practical characteristics of PBL? Under this theme we would like to welcome contributions focussing on development of already existing programs or pioneering implementations into new areas. Theoretical and/or empirical analyses of the links between PBL and contemporary research on learning are also possible contributions here.
OutcomeWhat do we know about the impact of PBL on students and teachers? Thinkable contributions here are studies comparing learning processes and outcomes of PBL and conventional curricula.
IdentityWhen is it justified to talk about a program as a PBL-program? What are the criteria for categorizing a pedagogical innovation as PBL? Contributions questioning, expanding or restricting core criteria of PBL are thinkable under this heading.
TrendsWhat is behind the corner? Can we foresee a role for PBL in the next century?
In which ways will PBL e.g. be affected by the increasing application of information and communication technology (ICT) in educational settings?
