Efficient Overload Management in Real-Time Database Systems
When a transient overload occurs in a traditional database system the most likely outcome is slow response times for the duration of the overload. This is not the case in real-time databases. In such systems a transient overload which is not handled carefully can result in disaster. Thus making overload management in such systems vitally important.
In this report we have taken a closer look at the OR-ULD algorithm for handling transient overloads in real-time database systems. The OR-ULD algorithm has previously been evaluated using simulations. We take it a step further and evaluate it in an existing real-time database system, DeeDS. For this purpose a scheduler has been developed and integrated into DeeDS.
A performance evaluation has been conducted where the OR-ULD algorithm was compared to EDF and one baseline algorithm. Based on our observations from this evaluation we have concluded that OR-ULD have predictable behavior, degrades system performance gracefully and outperforms both the other algorithms up to medium intense overload conditions.
