Usable Graphical User Interface for an Installation Process

ID: LiTH-IDA-Ex-01/49

As part of its products and services, Ericsson Radio Systems AB offers test and simulation solutions for their mobile network elements of the telecommunication networks. One of its testing solutions is the Test and Simulation (TSS) product. As its name suggests, TSS is a family of products for test and simulation that enables the simulation of one or several network elements in a telecommunication network. This thesis summarizes the software development cycle of a tool for managing the installation process of the TSS product. A core requirement for the tool is to have a graphical user interface. As a key part of the development cycle, a user-centered design approach is followed in order to assure the usability of the newly built tool. Part of the user-centered approach followed is the design-test-redesign cycle of a prototype in an incremental fashion. The evaluation method used for testing the prototype is a simple, cheap, quick and effective method. After implementing the tool, it is subjected to a user testing in order to assure usability. The result is a usable installation manager, which 80% of the testers, liked and thought it would improve their productivity.
