Abstract: The aim of decision support systems is to support a decision-maker, rather than replicate or interfere with him or her. This is often hard to achieve at once, and iterative development is often advocated as a remedy for this. We argue that it is important to investigate the role of evaluation in this development paradigm. It is the evaluation activity that helps us to reduce uncertainties of the effectiveness of the system, and gives us information for continuous adaptation of the system to its intended use. In the paper we describe a framework for development of decision support systems, and discuss our intended research activities for establishing the use of a proper evaluation methodology in this framework.
