I. The Opening Sentence (Part One, Ch. 1)
all happy families are like one another each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way

II. The Ball Scene (Part One, Ch. 23)
anna smiled and her smile was reflected on his face
she became thoughtful and he grew serious
a kind of supernatural force drew kitty’s eyes to anna’s face
she looked enchanting in her simple black dress her full arms with the bracelets were enchanting her firm neck with the string of pearls was enchanting the curls of her disarrayed hair were enchanting the graceful light movements of her small feet and hands were enchanting her lovely face was enchanting in its animation but there was something terrible and cruel about her charm

III. The Seduction Scene (Part 2, Ch. 11)
he felt what a murderer must feel when he looks at the body he has deprived of life
the body he had deprived of life was their love the first stage of their love
there was something dreadful and loathsome in the recollection of what had been paid for by this terrible price of shame
shame at her spiritual nakedness crushed her and communicated itself to him
but in spite of the murderer's great horror before the body of his victim that body has to be cut up and hidden for the murderer must enjoy the fruits of his crime
and the murderer throws himself on the body with a feeling of bitter resentment and as though with passion and drags it off and cuts it to pieces so he too covered her face and shoulders with kisses

IV. The Suicide (Part 7, Ch. 31)
she wanted to fall midway between the wheels of the first truck which was drawing level with her
but her red handbag which she began to take off her arm delayed her and it was too late: the middle of the truck bad passed her
she had to wait for the next
a feeling similar to the one she always experienced when about to enter the water to bathe now seized her and she crossed herself
the familiar gesture of making the sign of the cross aroused in her mind a whole series of memories of her childhood and girl hood and suddenly the darkness that enveloped everything for her was torn apart and for an instant life presented itself to her with all its bright past joys
but she did not take her eyes off the wheels of the approaching second truck
exactly at the moment when the middle distance between the wheels drew level with her she threw away her red handbag and drawing her head down between her shoulders fell under the truck on her hands and with a light movement as though she were getting ready to get up immediately dropped on her knees
and at that very instant she was horror-struck at what she was doing
where am i
what am i doing
why
she tried to get up to throw herself back but something huge and implacable struck her on the head and dragged her down on her back
lord forgive me everything she cried feeling the impossibility of struggling
the little peasant muttering something was -working over the iron
and the candle by the light of which she had been reading the book filled with anxieties deceits grief and evil flared up with a brighter light than before lit up for her all that had hitherto been shrouded in darkness flickered began to grow dim and went out forever
