However, crucial insights are often scattered across thousands of different systems, stored in different formats, and subject to complex data dependencies. The challenge of integrating this data prevents many transformation projects from ever getting off the ground. To solve this challenge, Graz has developed the Intelligent Data Exchange (IDX): a multi-integration hub that empowers organisations to automate even the most complex data integration processes. Built on more than two decades of Graz expertise in large scale, enterprise-grade integration projects, IDX enables businesses to connect to thousands of data endpoints rapidly, cost-effectively and in real time. Deployed on the SAP Cloud Platform and delivered as a managed service by Graz, IDX liberates enterprises to focus on their core objective: achieving digital transformation. IDX was designed end-to-end for full compatibility and tight integration with the SAP ecosystem. Using built-in RESTful APIs, IDX allows businesses to rapidly interface with practically any SAP solution on the market today. IDX uses a unique plug-in approach to integration logic, with ready-to-deploy patterns for many-to-many data integrations. In addition to SAP solutions, Graz has developed integration plug-ins for all leading ERP and financial management systems. Because IDX is a multi-integration hub, Graz can help you to design new plug-ins for almost any other endpoint, including custom-designed business applications or tools running on legacy platforms. Whether your business needs to collect data from a handful of data endpoints or many thousands, IDX plug-ins enable reliable, real-time workflow automation. You can add as many plug-ins as you need to support the most complex integration tasks: even workflows that demand simultaneous connections to over 10,000 different data sources. Architected for the SAP Cloud Platform, IDX can be deployed into production faster and with far less effort than an on-premises development project. As well as offering high levels of availability for mission-critical integration workflows, IDX scales out linearly in the cloud—enabling you to add extra capacity while keeping costs under tight control. The metadata generated by data integration platforms can contain valuable insights into everything from compliance to customer behaviour—but the costs of long-term data retention quickly add up. With the Cloud Data Sentry module in IDX, you can selectively store and analyse your metadata securely and cost-effectively via the SAP Cloud. Many enterprises depend on manual data integration to drive core processes such as compliance and financial reporting—exposing them to talent risk and the threat of human error. By automating data integration with IDX, your organisation can minimise risk exposure and contain IT spending. Data integration projects are notorious for their high costs, intense complexity and unpredictable delays. With IDX, the SAP Cloud Platform and expert services from Graz, your organisation gains a turnkey solution that offers extremely short time to value. Graz designed IDX based on 20 years of experience in the financial services space. Engineered for robust security, IDX is encrypted from end-to-end, and preserves a full and transparent record of every transaction—helping to ensure your organisation is compliant and audit-ready. Your data integration requirements will likely grow and change over time, so IDX is architected for flexibility. Scaling out IDX is as simple as adding new processing nodes on the SAP Cloud Platform. Crucially, IDX is designed to support workload peaks efficiently—for example, multiple data integrations that must all run simultaneously at the start of the working day. Because Graz handles the solution implementation and configuration process, there’s no need to divert valuable resources away from your core business activities during the IDX deployment—decreasing costs significantly. In fact, Graz provides managed services for all ongoing management, maintenance and development of IDX. By purchasing IDX as a service, hosted on the SAP Cloud Platform, you can keep your headcount lean and empower your teams to focus on what counts: extracting business value from your data. Instead, businesses must bring together information from multiple endpoints, ranging from enterprise-class business systems from SAP or other large vendors to custom-built applications running on legacy platforms. In many cases, the cost and complexity of integrating hundreds or even thousands of data endpoints brings digital transformation projects to a grinding halt. To solve this challenge, Graz has created the Intelligent Data Exchange (IDX): a cloud-based platform for fast, automated data integration. With pre-built integration patterns for the industry’s most widely used enterprise business systems—including SAP solutions—IDX is designed to integrate large volumes of data from multiple different sources simultaneously and without manual effort. Built on more than two decades of data-integration expertise from Graz, IDX runs on the high-availability SAP Cloud Platform, can connect with thousands of data endpoints in real time, and complies with stringent data-privacy regulations such as the GDPR. Once deployed, IDX can be managed as a service from Graz, freeing your business to focus on its core competencies. 111 57 Stockholm Graz Sweden AB OK pa|With the increasing regulatory burdens and costs of Solvency, MiFID and Basel, the benefits of having a flexible and scalable solution for reporting and analysis are becoming even more apparent. First, here’s a summary of the most important things you need to know: • SAP BTP is a collection of pre-integrated services that enable enterprises to build, test, deploy and manage cloud-native apps, rapidly and cost-effectively. • These services are built around a container framework based on the open-source Cloud Foundry platform. • SAP BTP is not a direct competitor to Amazon, Microsoft or Google; businesses can implement SAP BTP on any public or private cloud platform, and even move platforms after deployment. • Businesses that don’t use any SAP solutions—or even businesses that don’t use ERP solutions at all—still stand to gain from using SAP BTP to develop cloud-native services. So what were the business and technology drivers that led SAP to create this offering? Across practically all industries, digital disruption is transforming the commercial landscape. As more businesses harness their digital channels to build innovative offerings, target new customers and sharpen their competitive advantage, the ability to deploy data-driven services quickly, securely, and cost-effectively is becoming the key differentiator that distinguishes leaders from laggards. SAP knows that building this next generation of digital services requires a wide variety of tools and data sources. While some of these systems reside in traditional on-premises or private-cloud data centres, future-facing enterprises are increasingly looking to the public cloud. Cloud is the preferred destination for most businesses aiming to build new, data-driven solutions and services. And when a company selects a cloud-first or cloud-only strategy, one of its first priorities should be to enable effective cloud-native development. This is where SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) enters the frame. SAP BTP is a collection of SAP services and solutions in four key areas: 1) database and data management 2) analytics 3) intelligent technologies 4) application development and integration. The application development and integration area of SAP BTP includes all the solutions and services that were previously branded as SAP Cloud Platform. Today, SAP further subdivides these application development and integration solutions into two product suites: SAP Integration Suite and SAP Extension Suite. We’ll examine these in a little more detail at the end of this blog post. From now on, when we talk about SAP BTP, we’ll be referring to the application development and integration solutions of SAP BTP (previously known as SAP Cloud Platform). But what do these solutions do, and why might they be beneficial for businesses looking to embrace cloud-native development? Simply put, SAP BTP includes a collection of pre-integrated services that allow businesses to build, test, deploy and manage cloud-native apps, rapidly and cost-effectively. These services are built around a container framework that is based on a lightly modified version of the open-source Cloud Foundry platform. This open platform means that SAP BTP is equally suitable for businesses that rely on solutions like SAP ERP and SAP S/4HANA, those that collaborate with companies who use SAP solutions, and even companies that are completely outside of the SAP ecosystem. Crucially, all SAP BTP services are fully integrated with one another, which can dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of developing new digital services. It is important to note that SAP BTP isn’t just a container platform, although Graz believes that its container capabilities will be its main selling-point for most enterprises. Although the majority of businesses will have no need for the capability, SAP BTP even offers full support for more traditional virtual machine (VM) deployments—instantly familiar to developers who have used popular hyperscale public cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform. This brings us to another important question: is SAP BTP a direct competitor to Amazon, Microsoft or Google? For the most part, the answer is no. Because SAP BTP is fully abstracted from its underlying cloud infrastructure, it can be deployed on a wide range of hyperscale public cloud platforms with no loss of functionality. This includes AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, as well as SAP’s own public cloud. In fact, SAP BTP includes built-in support for the OAuth 2.0 protocol and OpenID Connect identity layer, which means it’s also fast and straightforward for businesses to incorporate SAP BTP deployments into a hybrid- or multi-cloud architecture without costly changes to the existing identity and access management regime. What does this flexibility mean in practice? One consequence is that businesses can implement SAP BTP on any public or private cloud platform of their choosing, and switch between platforms later as needed. For example, if a business initially deploys SAP BTP on Azure and later decides to adopt AWS as its primary cloud platform, SAP could theoretically lift and shift the entire SAP BTP deployment in a way that is completely transparent to business users and developers, and with no loss of technical functionality. As we mentioned earlier, businesses that don’t use SAP solutions—or even any ERP solutions at all—still stand to gain from using SAP BTP. That’s because the platform includes all the pre-integrated building blocks you need to build cloud-native apps quickly: databases, big-data platforms, cloud storage technologies, messaging, authentication and identity management services, and more. One of these building blocks in SAP BTP is the powerful SAP HANA data platform. Although at first glance SAP HANA might seem intimidating, its approach to queries is extremely similar to traditional platforms such as Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server. As a result, development teams and business users alike will be able to get started with minimal training. Even though SAP HANA is sometimes described as an in-memory technology, it’s actually far more versatile. Businesses can run SAP HANA in memory, on disk, or on a mixture of the two. Whichever option you choose, the architecture is fully transparent to the developer. To wrap up, let’s unpack the two solution suites of SAP BTP. One is SAP Integration Suite: the integration layer of SAP BTP, which offers capabilities and services that connect applications, processes, people, and devices. The other is SAP Extension Suite, which delivers services that empower businesses to quickly build and refine applications, business processes, and customer experiences. Graz has first-hand experience of these suites because we’ve made SAP BTP the foundation for our own business. For example, we run our custom-developed data integration solutions on SAP HANA Extended Application Services (SAP HANA XS Advanced), a comprehensive microservices platform that takes advantage of the in-memory architecture and parallel execution capabilities of SAP HANA. By using SAP Enterprise Messaging, a service within SAP BTP, Graz can connect its applications and systems across multiple cloud landscapes. And because the SAP offering is vendor-agnostic and fully portable, we gain all the advantages of using AWS S3 for object storage without the risks of vendor lock-in. Whether you’re planning your first steps into the public cloud or already well underway on your cloud journey, Graz is here to help with any questions you may have about SAP BTP. For many businesses, compliance is the immediate concern—but as time-weighted return insights become a standard part of the financial services offering, there will also be opportunities to harness this data to drive client satisfaction, foster loyalty and capture market share. In this paper, Graz explores the key challenges of architecting and deploying a performance calculation engine, and the best practices for developing a solution that satisfies both the short-term compliance objectives and the long-term client-experience goals. As the revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) comes into force, financial services organisations across Europe are facing the urgent requirement to deliver accurate insights into the performance of their clients’ investments. For smaller firms, calculating time-weighted returns (TWRs) is a relatively straightforward proposition—but complying with the directive at enterprise scale presents far more significant challenges. The ability for firms to deliver accurate, timely performance data will also become increasingly important from a competitive perspective. As TWR data becomes a standard feature of financial services offerings, future-facing businesses will seize the opportunity to turn performance insights into a source of competitive differentiation. By offering a view of asset performance that is instant, accurate and easy to consume via mobile devices, these businesses will be in a strong position to capture incremental market share and nurture long-term client loyalty. Businesses have essentially two options for delivering TWR insights: buying a pre-configured solution, or building a solution in-house. In this paper, we explore the challenges of building a solution, and recommend best practices to help overcome the challenges Graz identified while developing our own solution. Why choosing the optimal approach to delivering time-weighted returns data will be crucial for long-term success Why choosing the optimal approach to delivering time-weighted returns data will be crucial for long-term success Whitepaper Performance under pressure h1|Performance under pressure h3|Download and read the complete whitepaper sp|In the spotlight 111 57 Stockholm Graz Sweden AB OK pa|Graz Venture AB har utsett en ny styrelse. You need to be good at designing good code that’s easy to follow, we work with extremely large and complex data sets and there is very rarely room for programming around the actual problem. Almost all assignments will be done in-house and you will be expected to do the design as well as implementing your solution as an enterprise grade product. Solving problems is something you need to really enjoy (because you’re going to do a lot of it). All of our current developers have had coding as a hobby since high school or earlier. Big data focuses on volume and unstructured data; data warehousing focuses on structured data and traceability. Which technology will suit your organization best depends on many factors. Using traditional data warehouse technology to analyze sensor-generated data is probably not a good idea because of the high volume of data, just as using big data technology to perform regulatory reporting is not a good idea due to poor traceability. st|Jonas Olsson: sp|In the spotlight Posted on 111 57 Stockholm Graz Sweden AB OK em|Read the entire Q & A pa|Graz rekryterar just nu för ett långt uppdrag inom risk och performance som bör påbörjas i februari. However, the data required for a truly complete picture of financial risk is typically siloed in both internal and external systems, horizontally across business units and vertically by function. The difficulty of accessing the underlying data makes it very challenging to get a real-time, 360-degree view of risk exposure. Getting access to a complete set of data is therefore of great importance for any organization that wants to take risk management seriously. sp|In the spotlight Posted on Source is not available as of July of 2018 111 57 Stockholm Graz Sweden AB OK em|Read the entire article pa|För att kunna utveckla och ta del av nya finansiella tjänster ökar företagskunder och interna stakeholders krav på automatisering och integration. Data-driven logistics technologies are enabling companies to innovate and cut costs with leaner inventory management—but in an interconnected world, highly optimized supply chains can become a single point of failure. When COVID-19 struck, one of the first and most worrying impacts for many consumers was a rush on household goods. Resource shortages and new restrictions put supply chains under stress, and empty supermarket shelves became a common sight for several weeks. What lesson can we learn from 2020? One crucial takeaway is that supply chains can and should be more resilient. By building alternative sourcing strategies, businesses can reduce the risk of external shocks disrupting daily operations. Having worked for about 15 years with data warehousing and reporting in the financial industry, I’ve seen a lot of customers struggling with data quality. In my experience, one key mistake many organizations make, is that they have too narrow an understanding of what quality actually is, often equating data that is factually correct with quality data and not considering other factors that can lower data quality even when the facts are accurate. A close cousin to this mistake is assuming that there can be only one version of the data that is “correct”. This version is often referred to as “the truth”. A common consequence of this is that these organizations will often have a data warehouse that only will hold one single version of the value for each field. The problem with this approach is that very often there are multiple valid definitions or interpretations for the value of a specific field, definitions or interpretations that all yield a result that is factually “correct,” but that may be in conflict with one another nonetheless. In some cases one user group (say, legal reporting) will want to use a certain price for a security and at the same time another user group (say, risk and performance) will want to use another price for the same security. If your data warehouse only supports one value per field, in this case price, then at least one of the user groups will be unsatisfied with the data and claim that the information is “wrong”. Just before the holidays I met with a senior manager at an international bank who was experiencing exactly this problem. Their data warehouse only supported one definition of price and they had two influential departments with conflicting definitions of price. These two departments were locked in an ongoing battle. One department would register a change request to have a price changed to the close price. Two days later the other department would register a change request to have it changed back to mid price. Both prices were factually correct, but both departments were vehemently claiming that the price was wrong and had to be changed in accordance with their change request. During this struggle, the perception grew in the organization that the data held in their data warehouse was of poor quality (which it was, but not due to inaccuracy), much to the disappointment of the management who made a significant investment in their data warehouse to specifically address the continuous complaints in the organization over poor data quality. The solution to this problem is not to try to unify all the data definitions for every department or to focus on data management, but to support multiple and parallel definitions of the same concept. In order for your data warehouse to be accepted as the default source of data for analytical and reporting purposes, the well founded needs of the users must outweigh the desire to establish a company wide definition of each piece of data, even if it at first glance might seem as a compelling proposition to have a ‘single version of the truth’. Without a proper support for multiple and parallel definitions of the same data entity, you risk not being able to capitalize on your investments in your data warehouse. A data warehouse must be flexible enough to treat data in all of the ways that your organization requires. Failure to do this can result in poor data quality even when the accuracy of data has been assured with meticulous care. Jonas Olsson is the CEO and founder of , a data warehouse software company. It’s an understandable perception, since there is no doubt that big data puts a massive strain on organizing and data processing capabilities. But in the financial industry especially, it’s important to dig a bit below that first impression. Data warehouse systems can’t handle really big data, that’s true, and new methods of handling such vast amounts of information have had to be developed. But that doesn’t mean that data warehouses have become obsolete, any more than railroads were abandoned when the automobile or the airplane were invented. A second look at the situation shows that data warehouses have plenty of applications in the real world, where in most instances data streams too small to be considered “big data” are still the most important factors for decision-making. Big data refers to the task of managing huge volumes of data and is increasingly important in science and in certain kinds of commerce or by social media. A common dividing line is 100 terabytes of information. In strict accuracy, “big data” refers to data sets too big for common software tools to manage within an acceptable period of time, so the size in bytes is somewhat fluid as processing capacity improves. What is certain, however, is that big data refers to a of unstructured data, and while that kind of volume is of increasing concern, it doesn’t describe all of the universe of data processing requirements for business. The financial industry in particular seldom deals with anything close to 100 terabytes of data. What’s more, data warehouses are designed for a related but somewhat different task: dealing with data from operational systems, rather than high volumes of raw data from immediate transaction sources. Most organizations deal with no more than 15 terabytes of data, and that is well within the capacity of the data warehouse model of processing, and can benefit from improved methods. In addition to size factors, the purposes for which data is processed in the financial industry and many others (things like compliance, legal reporting, and risk management) are better served by data than by raw volume of data, and this fits the data warehouse model of processing better than anything developed to deal with big data. In short, predictions of the demise of the data warehouse are premature, and in fact we are likely to find more use for the data warehouse in the future than ever before, especially when considering Some CIOs and lead architects are looking into big data because they have the impression that their data warehouses are becoming bloated and cumbersome. On examining the situation, one often finds that the problem can best be addressed by applying improvements to the way the data is organized, specifically tailored for the financial industry. The real problem for that industry and some others is not the volume of data but the complexity. This is not to say that there aren’t times when financial companies need to store vast volumes of data, such as historical tick data. But in the vast majority of cases, the challenge isn’t that, but to get multiple computer systems working together without either losing or duplicating data. This is a complexity puzzle, and it’s best solved by applying the data warehouse model, not by resorting to the slick new technologies available. The potential of big data is exciting, to be sure. However, banks shouldn’t see it as a replacement for data warehouse methods that have proven useful over time, and remain useful. Remember not to let the tail wag the dog: technology is a tool for a business purpose, such as profitability, security, compliance, and productivity, not an end in itself. Accordingly, financial institutions shouldn’t be quick to replace a proven and useful method with another, but instead examine the virtues of both. sp|In the spotlight Posted on 111 57 Stockholm Graz Sweden AB OK em|lot structured structured pa|Meet Graz and other leading experts November 6 at Bank 2.012 conference at Grand Hotel Stockholm! The data model is by far the most important part of your entire data warehouse system. If the data model is inadequate, then sooner or later your system will be unable to properly store the data required to create the reports or do the analysis that the users want to do, which in turn will render your financial data warehouse useless. Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of projects for financial data warehouses come and go. One thing that many projects have in common is that there is wide gap between the business side and the IT side. One side understands the needs of the business and the other understands the technology, but neither understands both and the communication between them is sometimes poor. The result is often an inadequate data model and disappointing project deliverables. I thought I’d make an effort to bridge that gap and describe a basic data model for a financial data warehouse along with some hopefully useful tips. Please note that this is a very broad description and obviously requires more work to fit your organization’s specific needs. Also note that the definition of data warehouse that I’ll use might be a little different than your traditional one. Rather than viewing a data warehouse as an architecture, I’ll use a more real world definition; A data warehouse is a repository of data that enables all the users in your organization to do reports and analysis better. The keyword here is “all.” In order to create something that will be truly useful and provide a long-term , you need to design your repository in such a way that it can used by the entire organization and not just by a small subset of users. This will ensure that you will be able to continually build on your previous work rather than starting over every time the requirements or conditions change significantly. The ability to continuously build on your previous work is one of the major points of differentiation between a data warehouse and a data mart. Before we start, I’d like to share some general advice or strategies that I have found to be useful over the years. This means applying as little logic or aggregation to your data as possible, prior to storing it. This will allow you to reuse the data in your repository across your organization for as many different cases as possible. If you require to unify the data before providing it to users, that should be done when your system reads the data, not when it stores it. Very, very few financial organizations have a need to store more than 10 Tb in their data warehouse and that’s well within the capabilities of all the major database vendors. So, design to be able to deal with complexity, not volume. (This, however, does not mean that you should bloat your database. I’ll have more to say on that later.) . Being able hold all the data required for a reporting or analytical task is the key. If your repository does not hold or cannot hold the data the user needs, then the user has no use for your warehouse and has to create a similar repository to solve his/her needs, defeating one of the core purposes for building the warehouse in the first place. 1. The natural key for securities should never be Reuter, Bloomberg or ISIN code. The natural key should at least be the combination of ISIN, exchange, currency and series/class. 2. Some derivatives have multiple legs which will produce more than one row in your positions view regardless of your choice of natural key. 3. Make sure that you include the source for every record. 4. Depending on your business, you might need to have multiple physical structures for at least positions and transactions. If not, you could potentially bloat your data warehouse. You structure your data differently if you are working with 10 000 accounts than if you are working with 10 000 000 accounts, and your data warehouse needs to support the optimized kinds of structures as well. In addition to this basic structure, you need to create a supporting structure that can hold data that your core model does not support initially. This supporting structure is a value-pair structure that will allow you to easily and dynamically expand your data model as new requirements (or past mistakes) are discovered. In terms of performance, this additional structure will not be as fast as the rest of your data model, so at some point you may need to consider migrating some of the new fields into your core data model to improve performance. These two building blocks together with the additional tips will give your data warehouse project a good starting point and help you steer clear from some of the mistakes I myself have made. If you have any feedback or comments, don’t hesitate to send me an email at jonas.olsson[a]graz.se. st|1. Model your data so that you can reuse it as much as possible. 2. The new directive, Solvency 2, is meant to plug gaps present in its 1973 predecessor, Solvency I – primarily better risk management as well as correcting the inability of the first directive to lead to the harmonization of insurer supervision among member countries. Of course, the need for Solvency 2 has been further expedited by the events of 2008 where insurance companies were hit just as much as banks. For instance, the American International Group (AIG) had to be saved via a $185 billion US government bailout – the largest any US financial institution received. In a nutshell, the Solvency directives are to the insurance industry what the Basel directives are to the banking industry. Solvency 2 has three pillars just like Basel II and III do. One of the major differences is that Solvency 2 specifically targets insurance companies operating within the European Union while Basel has a wider reach. Still, given the considerable size and influence of European insurance market on the global insurance industry, it is expected that Solvency 2 will eventually percolate in some form to other jurisdictions especially if it leads to a more stable insurance sector in the Europe Union. The quality of data can never be separated from any form of financial services regulation or risk management – insurance or otherwise. Solvency 2 takes data quality requirements a notch higher to factor in changes to the financial services industry over the past 3 decades. When referring to data, the Solvency 2 directive has in mind the information (including assumptions) employed by statistical and actuarial analysis to determine technical provisions. Ultimately, the quality of risk management and regulatory reporting data is determined by the satisfaction of 3 criteria – accuracy, appropriateness and completeness. Most quality assessment systems will usually evaluate there three criteria using 4 distinct types of data check – technical tests, general ledger tests, functional tests and business consistency tests. As you would expect, there is no single formula for implementing a and risk management system that will ensure analysis, reporting and decision-making is based on data that is of the highest possible quality. However, it is almost inevitable that the assessment and management of data quality requires that all relevant information be at some point held in a single repository such as an enterprise-wide . It is highly unlikely that any significantly-sized insurance company today will have all its raw data relevant for Solvency 2 will be present in a single system. Solvency 2, just like similar risk management frameworks such as Basel III, requires that the data for risk analysis, management and reporting be obtained from numerous sources both within and outside the organization. Therefore a installed by an insurance company for purposes of risk management and Solvency 2 regulatory reporting will likely contain data from several source data systems. But the data from such disparate systems is almost always in different formats. Meaning, it will have to first be structured to a standardized format before it is uploaded to the . All this must be done without compromising data integrity. Such ‘conversion’ functionality may already be present in some platforms. Alternatively, the IT department of the insurance company would have to develop or work with a third party to create a separate software tool for converting the data. In summary, data destined for the risk management and regulatory reporting will move from the source systems to an intermediary ‘format converter’ before it is relayed to the . Having understood the general path that risk data will follow from its source to the , next comes the question of at what point the data should be checked for quality. The almost obvious response would be to perform quality checks at every step. But this can be expensive to implement and lead to redundant repetition that can ultimately strain precious network, server and human resources. Companies will have to determine what point of the data transfer chain is the most ideal for performing data quality checks. One option would be to do the data quality checks at the source systems. In this case, the responsibility would lie with the respective line managers to ensure the data captured is accurate, relevant and complete. The drawbacks of such an approach include inconsistency and duplication of efforts between departments. In addition, competing interests and ‘internal politics’ can compromise the quality of data eventually uploaded to the . A second approach is embedding the data quality checks within the data format conversion tool prior to posting in the . This is better than the previous option on many levels. However, its main shortcoming is that it might filter out data that in theory may not have significance in the quality of reporting but that may be very significant when looked at in the context of other data checks. This ‘robs’ the risk manager of information that though seemingly insignificant on its own, its combination with other checks may make it a major factor in managing risk and complying with Solvency 2 reporting. The third route to checking data quality is to perform it from within the . Of the three options, this is the best for several reasons. First, risk managers will be working with structured but relatively raw data whose content is virtually unchanged from what it is in the source systems. They can rest assured that the information in their possession has not been filtered by someone else. The second advantage is that access to such whole data gives more room for back testing and scenario modeling. Certain data checks can be enable or disabled for what-if risk assessment computation. st|data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse data warehouse h3|Understanding ‘Data’ in the context of Solvency 2 Moving data from source systems to the data warehouse At what point should you check for data quality? The result? An integration layer that must accommodate the intricacies of hundreds of systems across on-premises, hybrid and multi-cloud environments. This complexity shows no sign of slowing, and many IT teams are under pressure to stitch together an ever-growing volume and variety of data endpoints. If these teams rely on a build-it-yourself approach to data integration, there might be trouble ahead. That’s because an efficient and scalable approach to integration is essential to keep pace. By seamlessly and securely exchanging information held in systems of record, insight and engagement, businesses can uncover new sources of customer value, deliver innovative services, and sharpen competitive advantage. To enable integration, enterprises face a crucial choice: to build a platform from scratch, or buy a turnkey Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) solution. Given the continuing advancements in API-led connectivity and the proliferation of open source integration technologies, it’s tempting to assume the build route offers the fastest and most cost-effective path to the target capabilities.
