Standalone

After performing the configure and build procedure in Section 12, the build directory contains two x-kernel files: scout and scout.boot. File scout is an OSF/1 binary, and scout.boot is a bootable file. In general, rebooting a machine with a new image requires superuser assistance, so contact your installation administrator to boot from

scout.boot.

The standalone x-kernel boot procedure at the University of Arizona Computer Science department is as follows: copy scout.boot to /net/cag/usr1/local/boot/<YOURNAME> (or create a symlink), shut down the target system, and, at the boot prompt, type:

     boot ez -fi yourname
Note that, unless you put yourname in double quotes, the bootstrap loader will convert the file name into all uppercase.
