14 cm, with a broad black line (broader in the male)
down its otherwise yellow chest. The neck and head are black with white
cheeks and ear coverts. Upper parts are olive.
The azure blue crown and dark blue line passing
through the eye and encircling the white cheeks to the chin gives this bird
a very distinctive appearance. The forehead and a bar on the wing are
white.
It can grow to two metres in length and weigh
up to 96 kilos. It can live for 25 years. Colouring is brown to green with
spots on the dorsal side, shading to silver ventrally. A lateral line is
clearly visible.
While they live in freshwater they have blue and red spots. While they
mature they take on a silver blue sheen. When they are adults the easiest
way of identifying them is by the black spots predominantly above the lateral
line, although its caudal fin is usually unspotted.
