Seminars

Note that attendance at these seminars is mandatory. In the current pandemic situation you should still stay at home if you have symptoms that may indicate Covid-19. If you are well enough to participate from distance, contact the seminar leader (see schedule in TimeEdit) before the semiar and a meeting will be started in the course Teams channel.

Each seminar will deal with a specific topic, which is mentioned in its title. For each seminar some particular preparations are necessary, see each seminar.

When preparations include reading literature, you need to read the assigned texts and think about how you can apply the ideas/conclusions to your project. Write this down in a few sentences as well as three questions that you would like to discuss, and bring to the seminar. If your question arises from literature where only specific sections are indicated you can also look for the answer in the rest of the text.

The complete reference information for the literature is found on the literature page. Below HUT refers to Handbook of Usability Testing, MUT to Moderating Usability Tests and MTUE to Measuring The User Experience. Links will be added below later.

Seminars

  1. Introduction
    Preparations:
    None.
  2. Planning a user test
    Preparations:
Skim through HUT chapters 2-3 (if you have never done a user test before you need to read carefully), read HUT chapters 5 and 8, Sauro 2016, and sections Introduction and Conclusions from Lindgaard et al. 2007.
  3. Evaluating other than usability
    Preparations:
Read sections 1, 4, and 7 from Jonsdottir-Johannesen & Hornbaek 2014, sections 1 and 5 from Ragnemalm et. al. 2011, Brockmyer et. al. 2009, Fu et. al. 2009, sections 1, 2 (3 if you are interested) and 7 from Georgiou & Kyza 2017 and section 9.5 from Wiemeyer et. al. 2016.
Send an email to the course leaders naming the system you are planning on testing and what goal you are thinking of.
  4. Data collection and technical tools
    Preparations:
Read MTUE chapter 2, skim through 4-7 (if you have never done a user test before you need to read carefully), read Folstad et. al 2012.
  5. Plans for the user test
    Preparation:
Write a plan for your user test using the outline presented in HUT chapter 5. Remember to state what system you are testing, what the goal is (these should be approved by the course leaders beforehand), what techniques you are going to use, what data you are going to collect and how. Motivate your choices of techniques and data (note: this will form the first part of your final report, so you might as well think it through. Remember to refer to the course literature.) At the seminar you will present your plan and discuss the other student's plans.
  6. Moderating user tests and pilot tests
    Preparations:
Skim through MUT chapters 3-7 (if you have never done a user test before you need to read carefully), read sections Introduction (including Variety of TA Protocols in Practice) and Conclusion of Olmsted-Hawala et. al. 2010
Perform a pilot test of your test plan using 2 test subjects from the class. Participate in 2 test sessions and provide feedback to the test leader. Note down interesting feedback to discuss at the seminar.
  7. Equal treatment/dealing with different subjects
    Preparations:
Skim through MUT chapter 10, read sections 2 and 3 of Burnett et al. 2016, Rounding et. al. 2013, Introduction, Theoretical Framework, General Discussion, Comclusion of Oyugi et. al. 2014, sections Abstract and Discussion of Sonderegger & Sauer 2013, Sections Introduction, Related Work, Discussion and Conclusion of Frandsen-Thorlacius et. al. 2009, Sections 1, 2, 5 and 6 of Sim & Horton 2012.
  8. The scientific discourse on usability testing
    Preparations:
Read Grossman et. al. 2009, Åsberg et. al. 2011, Tuch et. al. 2013, Finstad 2010, Introduction, conclusion of Sauro & Lewis 2011, Lewis 2018. Introducion, discussion and conclusion of Melhart et. al 2019.
  9. Present the results of your user test (not really a seminar)
    Preparations:
Prepare a presentation of your user test. Focus on goals, system, test tasks (use the test tasks to illustrate the system), data collection methods, observations, identified usability problems and redesign suggestions. The time allotted for the presentation depends on the number of presentations to fit into the scheduled slot but will be max 20 minutes excluding questions.
