Mode of Work for WITAS System Development

In order to achieve its system goals (please click "Project Goals" for details), we work with a combination of simulations and flights with an actual, small-size UAV.

In the simulation part of the project, we build and extend a virtual world where a simulated environment flies over simulated vehicles that move in a traffic environment. Graphics facilities are used both for allowing a user to observe what is going on in the virtual world, and for providing the input to the vision system in the simulated UAV. The vision and "intelligence" (autonomous decision making) capabilities of the system are developed in the simulated environment before being placed on-board.

The actual UAV is being obtained from a neighboring startup company that has developed this technology, including both the physical platform and the on-board control system. This platform will be equipped with cameras and computing and communication equipment that is needed for the experiments and demonstrations.

The first flight with an actual UAV are scheduled for the year 2001. (The project started in the beginning of 1997, and the concluding demonstrations are scheduled for the end of year 2003).
