In general about the ETAI

The ECCAI system for specialized research publication. Accepted for the ECCAI board in January, 1997, as the policy document for the ETAI and its relation to the AICOM.
The ETAI Policy Committee
Conceptually, ETAI is a three-layered activity, consisting of publication, reviewing, and colloquium layers. Each area editor has is in charge of reviewing and - optionally - of the colloquium for his or her area. Publication, in the precise sense specified below, is taken care of by the ETAI secretariat, and area editors may just assume that it's in place. Reviewing is the core activity; it is assumed to work the same for all ETAI areas, and it is precisely specified what needs to be done there. Colloquia, finally, are local to each area, and it is up to the area editor to develop it according to taste. Different ETAI areas may run their colloquia differently.

An additinal perspective on the three layers of ETAI activities, with an emphasis on the colloquium layer, is given in the memo Scientific Communication on the Internet. The ETAI experience (also listed below).

The present web page contains links (obtained by clicking the button at the beginning of the line) to additional information for each of these layers of activity, as well as to auxiliary information. Items marked with a blue and black ETAI button are "official" and have been approved by the ETAI policy committee. Items marked with the colorful "bookshelf" button are working documents provided by the editor-in-chief.

The publication layer

The publication "layer" of ETAI serves two purposes:

  1. To arrange that articles considered by the ETAI are first published in the literal sense of "made public", that is, that they are posted on the Internet in a persistent fashion. "Persistent" means that they will stay on-line and that they can not be tampered with. Since reviewing in ETAI begins with a three-month period of open discussion, articles must be published (in this sense) before reviewing can start. ETAI's reviewing layer is organized so that it only deals with URL:s where articles are located, and not with articles submitted on paper.

At present there are three ways of publishing an article: by an FPA, by an FPS, or by a PCPA. These three alternatives are described below.

  2. To arrange that articles that are accepted by the ETAI are caused to appear in regular issues with the "look and feel" that is typical of a scientific journal. The Electronic Transactions on Artificial Intelligence is issued in both an electronic, on-line issue and a paper issue.
Rules for First Publication Archives (FPA:s)
Rules for First Publication Servers (FPS:s)
Rules for Posted Copies of Printed Articles (PCPA:s)

The reviewing layer

The Reviewing Process.
This memo is a bit old and "external", that is, it's not written specifically for area editors, but also for others and in order to explain how things work. Good for introduction and overview.
The tasks of ETAI area editors.
This memo is more concrete as a spec of commitments and a checklist for what the area editor needs to think about at each step of the review process.
Exchange of opinions about the ETAI reviewing process. (A bit old).

The colloquium layer

Scientific Communication on the Internet.
This draft of an article, dated February 1998, describes "the ETAI experience" as a whole, but with an emphasis on colloquium-layer issues.

Software and database support for colloquium level activities

For the ETAI area editor, the responsibilities in the reviewing layer do not need any particular software support, provided he or she has a knowledge of basic HTML. It is sufficient to follow the pattern of the other areas in setting up a limited number of web pages containing monthly News Journal issues, and one page for each submitted article, containing the discussion contributions for that article.

However, for those area editors who wish to also build colloquium level services, such as newsletters with e-mail distribution, on-line panel discussions, and bibliographic services, software support is indispensable. A set of such tools have been developed and used for the ETAI area "reasoning about actions and change", and are of course available for other area editors who wish to use them.
