IDA Departmental Publication Resource
Publication Archive Areas for Theses
Basic idea and current location
All licentiate and doctorate theses that have been presented
at IDA are listed in
the IDA publication
register.
The department recommends authors to put their licentiate
and doctorate theses on-line, although there is no obligation
to do so. The department also wishes to provide a system
whereby theses which have been put on-line can be held
available without problems over a long period of time, even
after the time the author may have left the department.
The following structures are presently being set up for this
purpose:
Location of the actual thesis
In order to make your thesis available on line, you have to
put the file of the thesis in a well defined place in the
department's Publication Area for Theses. This place is
presently defined as follows. Suppose the student
Persdotter has authored licentiate thesis
number 0701 in the School of Engineering (tek.fak.)
The full thesis will then be located in
ftp://ftp.ida.liu.se/pub/publications/lic/0701/persdotter.ps.gz
and the abstract will be held in
ftp://ftp.ida.liu.se/pub/publications/lic/0701/abstract.html
For self-documentation purposes, the file
ftp://ftp.ida.liu.se/pub/publications/lic/0701/thesis.txt
will only contain the string persdotter
(followed by a CR).
Ph.D. theses are stored in a similar way but using
phd instead of
lic. For theses in other
faculties, special coding isused.
You need to know about these directories because that's where
your thesis will actually be stored. However, the names of
these directories are only intended for internal use, and they
may be changed at any time. For external reference, read about
index pages in the next section.
It is intended to prepare a special script for transferring a
thesis to these Thesis Archive Areas. Awaiting that, you
prepare your thesis in your own area, and then get help
from the TUS group with the transfer.
Index pages for theses
For each thesis, there is a thesis index page containing
the key information about the thesis and a clickable link
to where the actual text is being held. The URL of the
index page for licentiate thesis number 640 in LiTH is
http://www.ida.liu.se/ext/pur/tlic/0640/
Theses in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
("fil fak") obtain URL's like in the following example:
http://www.ida.liu.se/ext/pur/flic/0640/
Ph.D. thesis are coded similarly, but with
tphd and
fphd before the number.
Index pages are set up automatically by as part of the PUR
service (provided by EMTEK), but the author needs to know
about since when you refer to the article, you should
always mention the URL of the index page and not the actual
location of the file. This is because the file may be
moved around in the future due to the technical requirements
of the computer system, but it is intended that the index
pages will be kept fixed.
Copyright and other policy issues
From the department's point of view, it is important
- That the contents of the IPA directory, like all other
on-line material, shall be consistent with the
university's and the department's IT policies and other
applicable policies.
- In particular, that the IPA area is not used for storing
articles on-line in violation of copyright agreements that
the author may have made with publishers outside the
university. Note that the application of this rule
is considerably stricter since January 1, 1997.
