AIJ Classic Paper Award 2012

The AIJ Classic Paper Award recognises outstanding papers published at least 15 years ago in the AI journal that are exceptional in their significance and impact. In 2012,  the first year of awarding the Classic Paper Award, nominations are restricted to those papers published between 1970 and 1979. The Award Committee will consider the possibility of making multiple awards. In subsequent years gradually more recent papers will also be considered until the 15 year interval is reached. 

Factors influencing the decision of the award committee include:

- Is the paper seminal in having started a new and important line of research?

- Has it lead to high impact applications?

- Has it resolved an open question or made a major advance in theoretical understanding?

- Has it heavily influenced other researchers (whether in or outside AI)?

- Is the paper's citation level high?

A nomination may come from anyone. Posthumous awards will be considered. Nominations are due by 30 June 2012 and must be made by email the following form (in simple text as part of the body of the email, NOT as an attachment). The subject line should read “AIJ Classic Paper Award 2012  nomination”. The email should be sent to: aij-awards2012@easychair.org

Please submit a brief statement (500 words or less) describing this paper's impact on artificial intelligence research or practice, addressing the factors listed in the call for nominations.  Evidence of the significance/impact should be provided/referenced.
