The WITAS System

The WITAS System consists of the software and information processing equipment for the two WITAS helicopters, as well as the associated systems for software development and for ground control of the helicopter. The development of the WITAS System is coordinated by Patrick Doherty, with participation by researchers and staff in the AIICS division of the Computer Science department and in the CVL Computer Vision Laboratory of the Electrical Engineering department.

The present set of pages contains brief introductions to some of the key parts of the WITAS System.

WITAS is engaged in goal-directed basic research in the area of intelligent autonomous vehicles and other autonomous systems. In its present project, the major goal is to demonstrate, before the end of the year 2003, an airborne computer system that is able to make rational decisions about the continued operation of the aircraft, based on various sources of knowledge including pre-stored geographical knowledge, knowledge obtained from vision sensors, and knowledge communicated to it by radio.
