Degree Projects related to
knowledge engineering, Semantic Web
and the Life Sciences / bioinformatics

If you are interested in knowledge engineering, Semantic Web or bioinformatics with computer science focus, contact Patrick Lambrix (Patrick.Lambrix@liu.se). Degree projects are available with focus on any of the following areas or a combination of these: databases, information retrieval, knowledge representation, ontologies, data and text mining, information extraction, machine learning.

Currently there are projects available in:

  • 1. Ontology engineering.

Ontologies are a key technology for the Semantic Web. They can be seen as defining the important concepts and relations in a domain. Ontology engineering deals with the creation and maintenance of ontologies. Within ontology engineering we are doing research in primarily two topics: ontology alignment and ontology debugging.

    • (i) Ontology alignment deals with finding the relationsships between terms of different ontologies. Our group has pioneered work in this area and developed, among others, one of the top systems for aligning ontologies. Our system, SAMBO, was the best performing system in the 'Anatomy' track of the 2008 Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative.

Thesis projects with a large research component or with a large engineering component available. Examples: developing new algorithms for ontology alignment / recommendation of alignment strategies / iterative ontology aligment, connecting SAMBO to Protege, visualization of ontologies, connecting KitAMO and Alignment API.

    • (ii) Ontology debugging deals with finding and repairing the defects in ontologies. We are currently working on detecting and repairing missing structure in the ontology, but also intend to look at semantic defects. Our system RepOSE is the first system that helps ontology engineers to repair the structure of ontologies in an interactive way.

Thesis projects with a large research component available. Examples: developing new algorithms for detection of defects / developing new algorithms for repairing defects / combining strucure defects and semantic defects / defects in ontology networks.

  • 2. Slicing the biomedical literature.

We are defining a new paradigm for searching in the vast amount of biomedical literature that we believe will provide researchers with large advantages compared to current search paradigms. This is work together with the University of New Brunswick, Canada and ASTAR, Singapore.

Thesis projects related to the different components of a prototype system supporting this search paradigm.
