Exploring translations for the translation class

Welcome to an experimental website for the visualization of parallel translations!

On these pages we develop some ideas for presenting parallel translations in the context of a translation class. Ideally the translations to be presented should be produced by the students themselves, so that they and the teacher could compare and discuss them in class. Here, however, we use four excerpts from Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina for illustration.

To enable comparisons all translations must be aligned with the source text. Ideally, the alignment should be available at different levels of granularity, from the section to the word via the sentence. In the examples, the sentence alignment has been checked for correctness, while the word alignment has been produced automatically, and so far been replaced with a manual alignment only for the first excerpt (the very first sentence of the source text).

In addition to what is shown now, we experiment with pages for correction and updating of alignments.
