Task 1: Game Analysis. Deadline: September 12.

Play the game Wake the Royalty on the web. Read this gameplay progression article. Read also Gameplay - wikipedia, and Game_mechanics - wikipedia.
Time: Play the game for at least 2 hours.

Deliverable: Your task is to describe the core game play, game mechanics and also deliver your opinion about the progression in terms of (a) development from pick-up-and-play to challenging yet interesting game play (b) variation and change. Are there any difficulty spikes that you feel will make some players miss out future levels that are easier? Hand in by adding a PDF on the TDDD23 Redmine .

Task 2: Mini puzzle game. Deadline: September 12.

Make a level for the game Ancient War. Download the game to your computer if you cannot play in the browser directly: click here to download.How to work the level builder will be demonstrated on the first lecture.
The main focus is on designing for choices: making players see alternative actions they can take.
Time: The idea is that you should spend about 4 hours constructing your level - constructing, playtesting and tweaking.

Deliverable: Post your saved level (.awk-file from the level builder) on the forum and comment on your ability to create a level that provides the player with alternative approaches to play.

Task 3: Game Project Statement. Deadline: September 12.

Make a short statment about the project you are going to do. It is an intention of work and specification of what you are going to do. Post the statement on the web:

  • Technical Platform:
  • Inspirational Games (if any)

Deliverable: A short post on the forum.


Task 4: Alpha Game Workshop. Deadline: October 3-4.

Bring your Alpha version to the Alpha Game workshop for playtesting at the IDA puls. Book a time slot for 1 hour and show up in time. Your alpha should be a playable version of the game with basic components in place. Focus on making something playable and leave complex algorithms for later. You need to make sure your game is playable at IDA in PC-puls (but it may be on your own laptop or device). Deliverable: Show up at the 1 hour workshop, set up your game and play other workshop members games.


Task 5: Beta Game Workshop: Date: October 12.

Bring your game tot he Game workshop where you will for halftime demonstrate your game and the second half play other students games. This is a joint workshop for the entire course. The idea is to circulate and see what other have played and see how other people react to your game. Times for when to demonstrate will be posted. You need to make sure your game is playable at IDA in PC-puls (but it may be on your own laptop or device).


Task 6: Individual Oral Project demonstration and examination. Date: Book time in forum - October 17-21

Prepare a 30 minutes individual oral examination of your game project, the design of your game and the implementation. Be prepared to answer any questions about the game in detail.


Task 7: Final release and Game Screen Cast: Deadline: October 21

Upload a playable version of your game on the forum for examination along with a link to a game screencast.

The final task required for you to pass the course is handing in a 2-5 minute screencast of the game. In this movie you should show and explain the gameplay. You can find a wikipedia article on software for screen casts heref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screencasting_software.

Our goal is to repeate the sucessfull LiU Game Awards and hand out prizes in a few dazzling categories, the most prestigous of course the industry pick! It will be part of v45, innovation week at the university.
