732A33 Data Mining and Statistical Learning
Course information
The course lays the foundation for professional work and research in which large amounts of data are explored, modified, modelled and assessed to uncover previously unknown patterns and trends.
It is an obligatory course in the Master's programme 'Statistics and Data Mining'.
The course consists of lectures, lab works and seminars. At the seminars, one student group presents lab solutions and another group revises these solutions by asking questions and commenting.
Students with a proper background can take it as a single-subject course. To check whether you satisfy these requirements, look at "Admission requirements" section in the Syllabus or contact Oleg Sysoev (oleg.sysoev@liu.se).
The course will be based on: Hastie, T., Tibshirani, R., Friedman, J. The Elements of Statistical Learning. Springer-Verlag 2001. ISBN:0-387-95284-5.The book is avaiable in the electronic form in the Internet free of charge (Tibshirani's homepage) or should be ordered in a book store, or on the Internet, well in advance of the course introduction.
All lecture materials, labs, deadlines and other course information is available at It's learning which you can access via Student Portal (for the students that are registered on the course!). Solutions to the labs should be submitted through It's learning; the revised reports can also be found there.
