ABSTRACT = {We first argue that Wizard-of-Oz studies have a special significance for the development of natural language dialogue systems and the understanding of the specific genre such systems induce. We then discuss the practical execution of Wizard-of-Oz experiments, drawing on experiences from some successful and some less successful studies of this kind. Finally, we discuss some potential drawbacks of the method, concluding that they can be avoided if the experiments are designed and carried out with sufficient care.},
