The ideas are collected from a large number of sources, some of which were presented and discussed during a number of meetings in the spring of 1986. A number of tools used in a traditional programming environment are examined together with new tools especially devised for distributed systems. Traditional tools such as sequential debuggers and tracing must be placed in the same conceptual framework as new tools such as demons. A model of systems where such tools can be helpful is presented. Finally, a few key issues that are yet to be understood before real programming environments for use in distributed systems can be constructed, are pointed out.}, IDANR = {LiTH-IDA-R-86-21}
