ABSTRACT = {The paper presents a grammatical formalism called Field-and-Category Grammar, which builds on insights and results from three quite different streams of work: the descriptive field grammars of the Danish linguist Poul Diderichsen, the functional unification-based grammars of Martin Kay and Ronald Kaplan, and the inheritance networks of Artificial Intelligence. Brief comparisons are made with other current formalisms, in particular as regards the statement of word order constraints. Finally, as an illustration of the descriptive potentials of FCGs, a grammar for a fairly large subset of Swedish is presented.},
