The synthesis system utilizes a unified design representation which captures the three elements of a VLSI system: control, communication, and computational elements and makes trade-off between them. The synthesis task is then carried out as a sequence of trade-off transformations. Selection of transformations is guided by the optimization strategy which makes design decisions concerning operation scheduling, data path allocation, control allocation, and module binding simultaneously. The integration of the several synthesis levels has resulted in a better chance to reach the globally optimal solution.}, IDANR = {LiTH-IDA-R-89-41}, NOTE = {Also presented at the Fourth International Workshop on High-Level Synthesis, Kennebunkport, Maine, USA, October 15-18, 1989}
