ABSTRACT = {This paper describes the construction of an integrated VLSI design environment based on a unified design representation. This design representation is derived from timed petri nets and consists of separate but related models of control and data parts. It can represent multi-level details of a design, thus supporting a hierarchical design methodology. The proposed design environment, the CAMAD design aid system, is currently under development at Link{\"o}ping University. The major properties of CAMAD as well as reasoning behind them are presented.},
