Independent IM server in a mobile environment

This thesis, commissioned by Xpedio, describes instant messaging and presence and the technique behind these services. It also puts forward the implementation of an instant message and presence server intended for use in a mobile network service platform. Many different instant message and presence services exists today. Most of them are developed to run over Internet using a stationary computer. Xpedio intends to add this service to their platform in order to be used with handheld computers and mobile phones. Because a handheld device has less memory and processor speed than a stationary computer a service aimed for these devices must have more efficient clients that do not require a lot of memory. The server must then perform some tasks that are usually performed by the client. This work demonstrates that it is possible to build and run an instant message and presence service aimed for handheld devices. The server can be made smart enough to have simple, memory effective clients running on the devices. One can also implement support for other instant message and presence services in the server. With this feature a user can, with only one client application, communicate with users on other services. In this way a user does not have to install multiple clients on the device and hence saves memory.
