limiting resource, but also other types of resources could be subject to
optimization, e.g. radio power or CPU capacity. This thesis aims to
develop a simulator for evaluating resource allocation algorithms in
mobile networks. After doing a limited study of free network simulation
environments, JavaSim is proposed as the base for the simulator. On top of
this, the nodes of the mobile network are modelled and implemented.
Traffic models defined in earlier work on mobile networks are used to
generate traffic in the network.
In order to evaluate the resulting platform two different resource
allocation algorithms are implemented and plugged into the simulator. One
of them, the Rate-Based Borrowing Scheme has previously known
characteristics. These are compared to reconstructed results from the
simulator. The comparison shows similar results, but the results of the
simulations are consistently poorer than the original ones. This is
probably due to some differences in the implementation of the algorithm. A
second algorithm, Time-aware Resource Allocation, is implemented to show
that the simulator is flexible enough to handle different types of
algorithms.
Execution time and memory consumption increase linearly as the number of
simulated nodes grows. With some modification the simulator can do
resource allocation based on resources other than bandwidth, for example
