Master Thesis - Past Projects - AbstractProcess Migration in OSEID: LiTH-IDA-Ex-01/62 This projects presents the result of a masters degree project in
computer science. The project aim is to extend the real-time operating
system OSE with a migration mechanism, such that it can migrate processes
within a distributed system. This thesis investigates theories of process
migration in the context of creating migration mechanisms in an operating
system.
Issues to consider in the migration mechanism are message redirection,
state encapsulation, state transportation, code image, obsolete
variables, real-time performances, and controlling the migration
procedure. These issues are held as conditions for design and
implementation of the developed migration mechanism.
The result is a message transparent and fault tolerant migration
mechanism without any residual dependencies. Further the migration
mechanism does not interfere on the OSE design and does not rely on a
master node, i.e., the migration mechanism is fully distributed.
Drawbacks of the migration mechanism are due to OSEs state restriction
and the constraint only having one unique process within a cluster (i.e.,
no identical copies of processes are allowed). Keywords: process migration, load balancing, distributed real-timesystems Author(s): Fredrik Gustafsson Contact: Jörgen Hansson
