Extension of a Software IP Telephony Client

IP Telephony is a growing market today. Software IP Telephony applications can offer advanced IP services, but there is a demand for a software client that can offer the users all the functionality they might want and that is compatible with other IP Telephony clients and servers on the Internet. This thesis work focuses on a basic platform for such a client. I investigate current clients and gather requirements of functionality needed in an "ideal" client in collaboration with both users and developers. To ensure compatibility, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is chosen as the protocol used in the client. An existing Open Source project is chosen to use as a platform for a new client -- the SIP Communicator; a SIP User Agent that supports voice and video over IP. The SIP Communicator is then extended with the functionality of handling incoming calls. The result is an Open Source software client for IP Telephony that covers some of the needed functionality and that promises to fulfil even more of it in the future, as the SIP Communicator project develops.
