GSLT/NGSLT course in Machine Translation
Requirements
To pass the course you should do the following:
- participate in all seminars,
- carry out two individual assigments (by week 43)
- carry out a project and present its results in a term paper.
The individual assignments will be decided in the beginnning of the course. One is a reading assignment on a selected course topic where findings are to be presented both in a short paper and orally (in one of the week 43 seminars). The other is a practical assignment which could be an implementation or an evaluation task.
Suggestions for topis of the reading assignment:
- A specific approach, such as
- Example-based MT,
- Statistical MT,
- Constraint-based MT,
- ...
- A comparison of two approaches,
- Treatment of some significant problem in different approaches,
- Multi-engine systems,
- Some approach to evaluation,
- Design and evaluation of translation memories,
- Alignment methods,
- Spoken language translation,
- ...
Overview of the seminars
The seminars in week 37 will be lead by Lars and will cover all main topics of the course including a brief history of MT, the most common approaches and their origins, a view of the machine translation design space, major and special applications, approaches to evaluation, computer-assisted translation, and the relation of MT to translation studies and linguistics.
The seminars in week 43 will be shared by the teachers and the participants. Dates for the final meeting (in Linköping) will be decided in week 37.
The final meeting (in December or January) will be devoted to term paper presentations.
In between intensive weeks you will have the possibility to discuss your assignments and projects with the tutors (either Lars or Sara).
