--------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ARTDB-97 - The Second International Workshop on Active, Real-Time, and Temporal Database Systems --------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Colleagues, Below you will find the preliminary program of the ARTDB-97 workshop on active, real-time, and temporal database systems, which will be held in Como/Milan, Italy, on the 8th and 9th of September. Enclosed you will also find a registration form and text presenting the scope of the workshop. The workshop is held in connection with ICECCS'97 and in cooperation with the IEEE CS Technical Committees on Real-Time Systems and Complexity in Computing and with the ACM Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD). More details about the workshop can be found on the ARTDB-97 WWW homepage. The address is: http://www.his.se/ida/artdb97/ Advance registration, including payment, is due on the 25th of August. On-site registration will be available (at a higher cost) on the 8th of September. We are looking forward to seeing you in Como, Italy (near Milan). Best regards, Jorgen Hansson and Sten Andler Organizing Committee University of Skovde, Sweden --------------------------------------------------------------- Scope of the workshop --------------------------------------------------------------- The areas of active, real-time, and temporal databases have seen tremendous growth in the last few years. Availability of rules/triggers as part of database functionality is changing the way databases are modeled and applications are written. The functionality supported by active database systems is meant to meet the requirements of a number of emerging applications (such as workflow, air traffic control, CIM, network management, and stock trading) where correctness of execution is based not only on transaction semantics, but also on the timeliness of the result. Hence, the integration of active functionality, with temporal and real-time constraints seems to be the next logical step. Both active functionality, rule based execution, and real-time capability are crucial for the support of time-critical and embedded applications. Active database systems typically support event-based rules and provide a uniform mechanism for supporting many traditional capabilities as well as new ones. Real-time and temporal database systems, on the other hand, support various types of timing constraints in addition to transaction semantics. A number of open issues need to be resolved in order to combine active, real-time and temporal capability. Introducing rules and triggers into a real-time database increases the complexity of transactions, predictability, scheduling etc. Temporal aspects on data validity complicates the matter even more. Although extensive research has been carried out in these areas, only a limited number of proposals have been made to integrate active, real-time and temporal capabilities. It seems timely for these research communities to again get together to identify and share research results as well as chart new directions. --------------------------------------------------------------- Advance Program --------------------------------------------------------------- The Second International Workshop on Active, Real-Time, and Temporal Database Systems ARTDB-97 Como/Milan, Italy September 8-9, 1997 Monday, September 8th 11:30 - 12:30 Registration 13:45 - 14:15 Registration 14:15 - 14:30 Opening Remarks 14:30 - 15:30 Session 1 - Invited Talk Semantics and Resource Management of Real-Time Database Systems Prof. Aloysius K.
