Titel:
Simulating Defence Mechanisms In Survivable Systems

Sammanfattning:
Society is growing increasingly dependent upon large-scale networked systems.
Despite the best efforts of traditional security techniques, nothing can
assure that critical infrastructures, such as telecommunication networks
and electricity supply networks, will be invulnerable to attacks that lead
to breaches of availability. To make critical networks survivable means that
they are made more robust in presence of attacks and that they survive even
some attacks that result in successful intrusions. Several defence mechanisms
can be conceived to enhance system survivability, but an evaluation method is
required in order to make them comparable among themselves. This thesis studies
a variety of those defence mechanisms using simulation as an evaluation method.
By modelling the network, the attacks, the defence mechanisms and a definition
of critical services we can perform such comparative studies. For this purpose,
a simulation tool for network survivability has been created, and the results
of some tested configurations in a realistic telecommunication management model
are presented here.
