Abstract:
 
ABB Automation China Ltd. is erecting a bar rolling mill in north of
China. For the mill, they have decided to develop a new system for
production control. The reasons for developing a new system are that the
previous design was not reusable and did not take advantage of recent
technologies.
 
The production control, commonly referred to as the Level 2, is part of
a bigger supervision system. The supervision system contains in addition
to the Level 2, the Level 1 comprising process control and the Level 3
comprising business management.
 
The main focus of this master’s thesis is new software solutions for
parts of the Level 2.
 
This report describes the functionality of the mill from a production
point of view and from a supervision system view. Moreover, the
technologies used for the new software and the design decisions that
have been made are presented. Finally, a comparison is made with
previous Level 2 systems.
