Abstract:
The area of home automation and networking is constantly growing and while
there exists a lot of technologies that deals with the technical aspects
of this area, the need for support and services from a user and
application point of view has not yet been fully met.
One thing that needs to be adressed is the development of a universal
"smart environment" for an intelligent home or office that includes
devices and people populating this environment. In this thesis, one such
model is presented and also implemented into a database.
An application that is built upon the model and visualizes how the model
can be utilized in a home environment has also been implemented and is
presented in the thesis. In this simulator, the user can create homes,
floors and rooms, move around devices and persons in the homes and perform
operations on the devices. In real life, this could be done perhaps over
the Internet or via a mobile phone.
Several functionalities, like the option to create programs to control the
home, and the ability to search for and locate devices with the help of
certain properties - physical location, time, state and mobility - have
also been implemented in this application to further extend the usability
of the home environment.
In conclusion, the evaluation shows that the model and the simulation of
the "smart environment", that are presented in this thesis, fulfill the
desired requirements that have been defined for the project.
