and SAP R/3 Systems at ALSTOM Power

Abstract:
The integration between several engineering systems at ALSTOM Power Sweden is 
currently solved by a point-to-point integration method, which is not efficient 
in many aspects.
The aim of this thesis work is to develop a mapping of the Metaphase data model 
into a chosen product data exchange format, which is vendor independent, well 
recognized within the industry, and able to describe an article, transferred 
from Metaphase into a SAP R/3 system.
The report gives background information on PDM systems, Metaphase, ERP systems, 
SAP R/3, and product data exchange standards. An investigation of the systems 
is done and the common exchange format STEP PDM-Schema is chosen. A mapping of 
the Metaphase information model into PDM-Schema information model is developed 
and evaluated. A discussion on the results is given and a suggestion for future 
work is presented.
Major findings are that transfer of customized attributes not pre-defined in 
the PDM-Schema information model are not well supported and require an 
unsatisfactory complex and inefficient work-around to implement.
