This thesis discusses the design of a paging system using DARC (Data Radio Channel), an ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) standard for FM-based digital radio. The report also describes how DARC works, as well as the architecture of SWIFT (System for Wireless Infotainment Forwarding and Teledistribution), a standard that defines the whole DARC communication system used in Europe.
The paging system presented in the report can be used by sending an email to the paging central - the email bridge - which forwards the message via the DARC network to the receiver. The message is received by a DARC receiver device connected to a palm-size PC running Windows CE.
The thesis work includes a prototype implementation of the system. The work was limited to implementation and testing of the email bridge.
