Implementing Process Management: A Scenario for Improved Quality and Performance at Sectra-Imtec AB

Anders Ek and Ernest Wessman

Summary

Process management has during the 1990´s become one of the most commonly used approaches for quality and performance related business improvement efforts. This thesis has been carried out at Sectra-Imtec AB in Linköping with the purpose to develop a foundation for the establishment of process management as a means of improving quality and organizational efficiency at Sectra-Imtec.

Based on process management theory that we believe meets the needs of the Sectra-Imtec specific situation, we have developed a process management implementation method. This method has been designed to create a more customer and process oriented organization through the definition of the corporate main processes and the implementation of a process organization, and also to finally define and establish good business processes. We believe that good processes can only be established if the following three areas are considered, addressed, and continuously improved: the process design, the supportive information system and information technology solution, and finally, the human resources actually involved in performing the processes.

In the report we have followed the method step by step, briefly discussing or performing the different tasks that we claim will lead to an efficient implementation of process management. The result is a scenario for the implementation including the mapping of the company as a system with the corporate main processes identified, and also a more thorough analysis of one of these main processes that has resulted in process maps and descriptions.

To finally succeed with the effort of implementing process management as a way to continuously improve business performance and quality, we believe that everybody involved needs a thorough understanding of the ideas and advantages of process management, and also everybody needs to be committed to the effort.
