The Division of Human-Centered Systems (HCS) conducts interdisciplinary research on safety and security in complex systems. The research is a joint effort between research laboratories in the Division, bringing together scientists from cognitive sciences, psychology, computer science, informatics, interaction design, and other disciplines. The key research areas are: Command & control, Simulation & modeling, Resilience, Support systems and Service design.
HCS assists SRSA with evaluations of the disaster exercise TRIPLEX 2008
TRIPLEX is a large international exercise focusing on the joint humanitarian response and takes place during the
period 13th-19th of september 2008 in Norway and Sweden. HCS assists the Swedish Rescue Services Agency (SRSA) with evaluations of the exercise set up and execution.
HCS co-coordinates the emergency exercise GNEX-07
As last year HCS coordinates, in close cooperation with its partners -
"Centre National d'Études Spatiales" (CNES) and the “Centre for
Satellite Based Crisis Information”, German Aerospace Agency (ZKI/DLR) - an European wide emergency
exercise. GNEX-07 exercise focus on the use of satellite imagery and other geospatial technologies
for supporting emergency response capacities of EU's Monitoring and Information Center (MIC) and DG Relex.
The exercise will take place at several geographical locations in Europe in the period 15th-19th of October 2007.
David Mendonça, New Jersey Institute of Technology visits HCS
David Mendonça, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) visits HCS during the week 43. David is an Associate Professor in
the Information Systems Department at NJIT. His research is concerned with modeling and supporting decision making by
individuals and organizations, particularly in emergency situations. His work has been supported by a number of grants from the US National Science Foundation,
including a CAREER award in 2004 and three awards pertaining to the 2001 World Trade Center attack. David will give a public
