Dialogue Management in Smartkom

At DFKI  in Saarbruecken we  are concerned with  the development of  a dialogue toolbox that  can be used  for different dialogue  systems.  In the  toolbox we have natural language analysis, modality fusion/fission, discourse modeling and an  action  planner.  Within  the  German  government  funded project  SmartKom (www.smartkom.org) we  have instantiated the toolbox for  a multimodal dialogue system  allowing a  user  to  interact with  different  databases, devices  and services  using voice, gestures  and mimic.   The system  is realized  in three different scenarios.  The ¡Èpublic¡É scenario is akin to an intelligent telephone booth where,  additional to using  the telephone, tasks like  movie reservation and sending email and fax can  be performed.  In the ¡Èhome¡É scenario, different devices  like TV,  VCR together  with  program guide  (EPG) are  used.  In  the ¡Èmobile¡É  scenario, the  user  communicates  with Smartakus  via  a PDA.   This scenario includes tourist information and an incremental guide as well as route planning  applications  for  pedestrians   and  drivers.   Using  the  situated delegation-oriented  dialog paradigm (SDDP),  the user  delegates her  needs to Smartakus --- a life-like character ---  that helps to reach her goal by asking for additional information and presenting results.
